Claude Lorrain

1600 - 1682

September, 2010

This exhibition examines Claude Lorrain's handling of the etching medium. In examining his individual etchings, one is struck by their technical mastery as well as their sensitivity and their beauty. The leading landscape artist of his generation is nowhere more impressive than in these small etchings. Through his discovery and successful use of many exploratory techniques in the creation of his prints, Lorrain now is recognized as one of the great experimental printmakers, a category which includes artists such as Rembrandt, Goya, Degas and Villon.
